okay anyway time for wangxian fake dating au.. tw for canon typical child abuse
wei ying: haha madame yu doesn't like me and sometimes she hits me but it's okayy I owe the Jiangs a lot :)
Lan Zhan:
Tumblr media
Initially it starts as Lan wangji going to family gatherings with wei ying as friends, because Madame Yu wouldn't want to make the Jiang clan look bad by blowing up and cursing in front of a guest from the Lan clan, much less the twin jade of gusu. It works for a while before lan zhan is having dinner with the jiangs and madame yu is making everyone uncomfortable by berating wei wuxian
Lan Zhan interrupting her: actually I do not appreciate you speaking about my fiancee that way
Everyone (including wei ying): WHAT????
for his entire life lan wangji has been going "i don't want to be a prominent figure in the cultivation community, i just want to do good things" and now all of a sudden he's going "did i mention i'm one of the twin jades of gusu and my uncle is the lan sect leader. btw. if you were wondering."
It would be so funny. Madame Yu's hatred and anger immediately jumping to Lan Wangji instead. they would have the CRAZIESTTT beef
madame yu: wei wuxian you-
lan zhan: oh what are you about to say to HANGUANG JUN'S FIANCEE? What are you going to say to MY FUTURE HUSBAND aka the guy who will hold massive power in the lan sect once we're wedded?? just a reminder you can bully your adopted son but insulting a member of the MAIN LAN FAMILY... :))))))
Madame Yu:
Tumblr media
wei ying started this whole thing so he could have dinner in peace but the way things were before is NOTHING on the the passive aggressive threats lan wangji and madame yu are hurling at each other

One of the key things about Wei Wuxian's dynamic with Madam Yu is that even after everything he deeply deeply respects her. And in fandom I very often see people change that into something a lot more negative because they think his feelings need to be "corrected" into something more "appropiate" for the woman who abused him
And I do get it. It can be deeply cathartic to finally let yourself think badly of your abuser, especially if you were made to feel like you owed them something. So of course people are going to explore such a thing in fanfiction. But I do think that you lose something very interesting if you decide that he didn't care about her.
Wangxian's first two marriage bows are in front of her spirit tablet and Wei Wuxian openly says she should consider one of them the bow to the father and mother, essentially claiming her and Jiang Fengmian both as his family. He's so shocked and offended by the idea of attacking Jiang Cheng in front of them that it pushed him over the edge of exhaustion and he fainted.
Mind you all of this is after the scene with the tree where he let Lan Wangji catch him, a moment meant to symbolize Wei Wuxian accepting himself as worthy of protection and help. Even after that realization, he still respects her. And Lan Wangji sits with him. Lan Wangji, who certainly has no qualms about hating people who've mistreated Wei Wuxian, nonetheless lights incense and bows to her and Jiang Fengmian's tablets with him, because if nothing else he accepts the respect Wei Wuxian has for her.
Look, all I'm saying is that of the two people who heard Yu Ziyuan's last request before her death only one of them listened to her and it wasn't Jiang cheng!

Sometimes I think of the choices of two different adaptations (the donghua and the untamed) to soften Madam Yu's abuse on Wei Wuxian and I'm left baffled.
"she held back her whip". What do you mean she held herself back ? Where ?

I need a fic where the war never happened because I like to imagine that when wangxian starts dating (but only jc, yanli and lxc knows and the rest of the cultivation world think they hate esch other), wwx jokes that if lwj wants to marry him he has to ask first to jiang fengmian and madam yu.
But lwj, bless his heart, actually does it. Also this is the time when yanli and jzx broke their engagement so when people start to talk about the lan clan going to yunmeng with the intention to marry a jiang, everyone thinks that it's yanli and jzx starts to panic.
So, lwj gets to yunmeng, madam yu is looking at him like she's about to kill him if he does something wrong, jfm is at his wife's side but we all know she's the one who takes the decisions.
Madam yu: so, you want my daughter's hand in marriage. Well, you're not jzx, but the second jade of lan is not...
Lwj: sorry, but I'm here to ask for Wei Ying's hand.
Wwx can't take it anymore and starts laughing.
Wwx: LAN ZHAN! I wasn't being serious!! I can't believe you actually did it!!!
Jfm and madam yu are confused, yanli feels sorry for them but at the same time this is too funny, and jc wants to die.
Because holy shit??? What do you mean that lwj, the amazing lwj, wants to marry wwx????? Madam yu and jfm are in shock. They obviously accept but they're like. So confused. Didn't they hate each other???
It gets worse, because a few days later jzx arrives to yunmeng and suddenly yells: "PLEASE LET ME MARRY YOUR DAUGHTER I REALLY LOVE HER PLEASE DON'T MARRY LAN WANGJI" or something like that.
It's pathetic. Jzx is there with only jgy and its obvious that he spent the last days flying as fast as he could to yunmeng, because he looks like shit.
But yanli finds it adorable, and jgy convinces madam yu to accept jzx terrible proposal.

Some people don't seem to realise that if not for Jiang Fengmian bringing Wei Wuxian to Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng would never have been friends (or friendly). I would even argue that Wei Wuxian would be nicer to Jin Zixuan than Jiang Cheng. Why? Because Jin Zixuan at least has some honour. A scene that illustrates this better than anything is the Xuanwu cave. Who went against the Wen to help Mianmian? Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan! And how did Wei Wuxian react to that unexpected turn of events? He praised him! (Well, kinda)
Jin ZiXuan lifted his brows, “Is that enough? It wasn’t enough for people to be flesh shields for you, and now you want live humans to bleed for you to use as bait?!”
Wei WuXian found this somewhat surprising, So Jin ZiXuan really does have some nerve.
ExR. ch. 52 (original emphasis)
And what was Jiang Cheng doing? Trying to "reign" Wei Wuxian in so that he "doesn't stir up trouble". Why did he not go against the despicable Wens as well? Let me use his own words:
Jiang Cheng warned, “We aren’t even able to care for ourselves; how do we have the time to care about the trivialities of others?”
And Wei Wuxian's response:
Wei WuXian, “First, this isn’t a triviality. Second, things like this, somebody will have to care about them, sooner or later!”
ExR. ch. 52
And Wei Wuxian doesn't say this because they're talking about Lan Wangji and burning of Cloud Recesses. This is the fundamental difference between them. Jiang Cheng is too self-absorbed to care about others (unless they are related to him by blood), while Wei Wuxian wants to help everyone if he is able to, not because he "has a hero complex", but because that's the right thing to do.
People can be friends with others while having different ideas, but when you disagree on the core beliefs, friendship is hard to achieve.

Saw a mdzs fandom post suggesting that chengxian be tagged as incest. And now I'm imagining that Madame Yu would be so against the idea of people believing that Wei Wuxian was part of her blood family that she would actually set up a betrothal between him and Jiang Cheng just to prove it. Not with Jiang Yanli, though; her girl deserves better.

Protective Jiang Yanli Headcanon:
I have this idea in my head where Jiang Yanli is a bit more protective and political than in canon.
In my head when Wei Wuxian comes to Lotus Pier Jiang Yanli latches on to him just as he seems to latch on to her. Here is someone who needs her, who to a certain degree relies on her. In many ways Jiang Yanli sees Wei Wuxian as her child because she is the one that raises him.
The political side comes in regarding her engagement to Jin Zixuan. Wei Wuxian isn’t treated well by Yu Ziyuan and Yanli knows that her father won’t step in to stop Yu Ziyuan from hurting Wei Wuxian. So Yanli comes up with a plan. Yanli plans to take Wei Wuxian with her to Koi Tower.
Of course this brings its own set of difficulties. She will have to convince her father to let Wei Wuxian go, the toxic environment of Koi Tower, and the fact that Jin Zixuan resents their engagement.
Jiang Yanli schemes. The easiest to overcome is Zixuan’s dislike, she just needs to make him see her as a victim or ally rather than an enemy. This idea leads to her ultimate plan.
Yanli is going to poison herself while she is at Koi Tower. She is going to lay the blame on either one of the female Jin disciples who acted out of jealousy or one of Jin Guangshan’s cronies with the excuse that they think closer ties with Yunmeng Jiang will cause a decrease in their power (or something similar). The point is that she needs there to be an initial panic, investigation, and ultimately while someone will be caught Yanli needs there to be doubt in her parents’ minds as to whether Koi Tower is safe for her.
At this point Yanli will request that Wei Wuxian comes to Koi Tower and acts as her bodyguard. She knows that with the recent poisoning attempt her father will be weak to her request and more likely to grant it. It will be even more effective if she can get Jin Zixuan to request that Wei Wuxian come to Koi Tower to look after her because her parents can’t deny a sect heir easily.
Jin Zixuan will make the request because after Yanli poisons herself and her fiancé comes to see her she will tearfully request that he bring one of her brothers to Koi Tower. She will say she is afraid and that she misses her brothers. She will act weak and pitiful to soften Jin Zixuan’s heart to her. Jin Zixuan will see how Yanli was poisoned by someone of his sect and see her as a victim. He will pity her and thus accept her request and bring it up to her parents.
Of course Jiang Cheng cannot come to Koi Tower he is the sect heir and must stay in Yunmeng Jiang where it is safe. Wei Wuxian however is much more free to come to Koi Tower and look after his Shijie.
Jiang Yanli is happy. Months of planning, carefully building up an immunity to poison, and gathering the necessary ingredients have all payed off. As for the toxic cloud hanging over Koi Tower, there was already one poisoning attempt who is to say that there won’t be a second and that Jin Guangshan is the unfortunate victim this time. Of course with Jin Guangshan dead and Jin Zixuan the new sect leader Wei Wuxian will need to stay at Koi Tower indefinitely to protect Jiang Yanli.
I’m not sure how this ends. Maybe with Jin Ling’s birth or maybe with Wei Wuxian marrying Lan Wangji. I don’t know how much Jiang Cheng or Wei Wuxian know about Jiang Yanli’s plan. I am aware that Jiang Yanli can be considered OC. In the end this is just an idea that I had and wanted to share. I hope you like it!

LWJ and How He Parallels His Father
Okay, so I just have to get this out but in the flashback at the Golden Carp Tower where LWJ talks with his brother briefly, it seems to mirror his father. They both take back (or at least try to) their love and put them out of harm's way despite the harshness of this. LWJ with WWX and trying to hide him from the cultivation world and his father against the Lan clan itself. This makes Xichen's reaction interesting. He seems astonished, likely because of LWJ's tendencies, but also very potentially due to this parallel. I would love to have his thoughts regarding that in this scene but they're both interrupted before he can speak them and it's not elaborated on enough to determine whether or not he's thinking that way.
This also raises the question of whether or not LWJ got the idea from his parents or his general opinion on it in relation to this. He takes longer to phrase it when he vocalizes it to his brother but it isn't shown why that is. It could be usual difficulty trying to phrase his situation or it could be a result of this parallel that he's carefully speaking his mind. It makes one wonder what would have happened if WWX had actually accepted considering the hind/foresight that LWJ and LXC's parents would bring to the situation. This is, of course, ignoring the other reasons he can't go and be hidden. There is so much to be analyzed with MDZS and WangXian's relationship alone.

Genuine question I'm asking:
Why do some people expect Jiang Cheng to protect Wei Wuxian from Madame Yu's abuse?
Like I don't get that. Why would you expect a younger child to protect the older one against their abusive mother. Especially someone like Jiang Cheng who has been taught that what he says and does doesn’t matter.
I just want some clarification on this cause I'm confused.
